- "Can you believe it?" Hunter grumbled to his assistant. "We give them this
- new technology. If we can harness its potential, we tell them, we can spread
- peace and health across the world. And what do they do with it?" He sighed,
- his lips forming into a pout.
-
- Ward shrugged, then checked his watch. "Well, the next batch should be ready
- soon. You want to go get it? I'll start putting some more in the feeder."
-
- Hunter sighed and nodded. He went to the "oven", as they called it, although
- it didn't really produce heat. Opening the door, he lifted the blocks of gold
- one by one and put them on the cart. Ward was dropping chunks of lead into the
- feeder up a few feet away.
-
- When the cart was full, he closed the oven door. Automatically, the cart
- started up and disappeared along the track into a hole in the wall. Not for
- the first time, Hunter considered jumping into the cart instead of the gold,
- but they had been warned that the intense heat the gold was subjected to in
- processing would surely be fatal for them. In a few months he'd probably be
- ready to do it, just to make things inconvenient for them, if nothing else.
-
- "I wish they'd let us out of here sometime," he said.
-
- Ward sighed. "You think we'd ever be safe if anyone found out about this?
- Heck, if anyone even suspected how much gold was in here, the economy would
- nosedive and civilization as we know it would collapse."
-
- Hunter nodded. "But if we could just tell the government what was going on!"
-
- "Do you want tenure, or not?" Hunter had no answer to that, and they went
- back to waiting for the process to complete.
