  27. In Welsh folklore, Mabon is not the name of a holiday as such (it is
  28. not clear whether Celtic peoples celebrated the solstices and equinoxes
  29. before contact with dominant Germanic cultures - most scholars think
  30. not) - but Mabon ap Modron is a god of youth and vitality, ready to
  31. take on challenges and endure hardship. His cult was popular in the
  32. north of Britain among the Romano-British soldiers who manned Hadrian's
  33. Wall - maybe they thought he might protect them from the Picts and Scots 
  34. or at least ensure them a good afterlife if they died.
