  13. About Pugwash:

  15. Pugwash is an international organization founded by and dedicated to the
  16. ideals of Albert Einstein and Bertrand Russell in relation to the creation
  17. of rational technology policy.  Student Pugwash USA has chapters in many 
  18. High Schools and Universities, and there are similar organizations for
  19. educational chapters in other countries.  Senior Pugwash is a similar
  20. group serving the scientific community worldwide.

  22. At the 1992 Student Pugwash USA Chapter Organizing Workshop, it was
  23. decided, and thus voted, that a UseNet newsgroup should be created for
  24. discussion of Pugwash related topics.  It was further decided that I
  25. should try to create this newsgroup.

  27. Pugwash believes that people will make proper decisions if they think about
  28. the social implications of their actions.  To this end, Pugwash suggests
  29. open discussion about ethical concerns without excluding people for a supposed
  30. lack of knowledge on their part.

  32. About the alt.pugwash newsgroup:

  34. It is a forum for people to bring up and discuss a wide variety of
  35. Science, Society, and Technology issues.  Some sample topics discussed
  36. at Pugwash meetings are:  Biotechnology, Overpopulation, Environmental
  37. Pollution, and Biodiversity.  Many other topics lend themselves to
  38. Pugwash discussion as well.

  40. Questions/comments about pugwash-related topics should be posted here.
  41. Questions/comments about the technicalities of this newesgroup should
  42. be emailed to pugwash@wpi.wpi.edu.
