- OK - so today I got luckier. I've been going to my favorite record shops
- hunting for the new King Crimson live box set. Having just bought some more
- Crimson boots a few weeks ago, and having heard all the great stuff about the
- set, I hust *had* to have it. I finally walked into a store I was *certain*
- would have it. Not in the bins or on the walls.
-
- Dejectedly I picked up the Eno 'Ali Click' CD single (as if I need to buy MORE
- Eno, having picked up 'Nerve Net' and 'The Shotov Assembly' in the last month -
- well I had to buy SOMETHING) and proceeded to the register. "Have you happened
- to hear of this new Crimson box?", I sheepishly asked. "Why yes - it just came
- in today" the clerk said as he unpacked it from a big cardboard box...
-
- What can I say - this is one awesome package here. The packaging is stunning.
- The book is so entertaining that I read the whole thing (68 pages) prior to
- putting the first CD of the set into the player. Fripp's journal entries make
- for great reading. Putting every known review or article ever printed about
- 'Frame By Frame' (including the review Fripp did *himself* for Musician
- magazine, and the resulting letters to the editor) in was a nice touch. It's
- surpising how personal some of the material is - especially the letter from
- David Cross. There's even more notes in the jewel box inserts.
-
- I don't know when I've seen a CD compilation that so thoroughly relives a
- period of history in music, photos and personal terms (OK - a group I actually
- *care* about). It's in the same league as the 'Let It Be' movie for examining
- the decay and demise of a band. It also reminds me of the Roxy Music history
- video in that after all these years it's thrilling to have all this material
- sitting in your hands, with high quality as well.
-
- The sound quality is incredible and the performances are easily as powerful as
- you might imagine. Words can't describe it - just the way a Crimson performance
- should be. There are of course errors in both recording and performance, but
- that is as it should be. David Cross gets pitched into the weeds a few times
- (like at 9:00 into 'Fracture' on disc one...). It's all here...
-
- Buy it. Do whatever it takes to find it. The packaging and book are worth $54,
- let alone having almost FIVE hours of intense, well-recorded, vintage Crimson
- to drown in. You may not come out of your listening room for days though...
-
- Track list follows in a separate post.
-
- Now if only I could get 5 hours of live 72-73 ELP in this format...
