- Counting the number of machines on the Internet by doing some sort
- of name count is likely to yield a slight overestimate. Every machine at
- the University of Toronto has two legal names (machine.dept.utoronto.ca
- and machine.dept.toronto.edu); there are historical reasons for this and
- I know that we are not the only campus engaging in this sort of shenanigan.
- I have no idea of how large an impact this would have on the numbers, and
- since new machines are being connected all the time, perhaps the
- estimate yielded will be low anyway.
- In any event, it's an interesting problem.
