- Let's REALLY face reality here. H.P. Lovecraft revitalized horror
- literature. In the roaring 20's, when it seemed nothing could go wrong and
- everyone was happy-go-lucky, HP dared to think of a bleak and uncaring
- universe. He was regarded as sick and twisted by the majority of his critics.
- As for his prose, HP's main influences came from the Gothic horror
- genre, which is filled with atmosphere and lengthy description and very little
- gore. I'd agree that HP can be overly wordy at times, but you have to allow
- for the time period in which he was writing. It's just as ignorant to say
- that Shakespeare sucks because his works are filled with "thou" this and
- "wherefor art" that. He sucks for other reasons.
- Face facts, HPL directly influenced a great many current horror, sci-
- fi and fantasy writers.
-
- BTW, I enjoyed Watchers and Twilight Eyes (w/ Dark Lightning) by
- Koontz a great deal, but have heard from many people that he doth verily
- suck when his work is taken as a whole.
