- I was presently surprised that the producers of "This Week with
- David Brinkley" were unable to get any current military official such as
- Dick Cheney or even Colin Powell to defend the present policy.
- Unfortunately (or fortunately :^) the only person they could find to
- strongly defend the policy was the older retired officer who came across as
- a complete bigot. The younger retired Admiral from the Joint Chiefs of
- Staff held a much more rational and coherent discussion, though as a
- previous poster said, he tried to frame it as poor public relations and
- problems with disgruntled servicemen using the 1-800 hotline for vengence
- by accusing someone of homosexuality.
- I thought that the program clearly presented the problem with many
- members of the U.S. public who cannot distinguish between a person's innate
- sexual orientation and the way that someone expresses their sexual
- orientation; they cannot recognize the difference between an essential
- characteristic and conduct. Sexual harassment is sexual harassment is
- sexual harassment and the U.S. Armed Forces need to focus on that without
- differentiating among sexual orientations.
- I was somewhat disappointed that the discussion never considered
- how to implement a recinding of the ban, such as the famous separate units
- and quarters because shower stall and toilet stall separators are such a
- difficult concept to understand.
- More disturbing was Senator Sam Nunn's public comments supporting
- the ban. I expect that sort of stupidity from Senator Bob Dole but I
- thought that Nunn's comments unnecessarily undermined his own party's
- President-elect. What was the point? That sure isn't going to win him
- brownie-points in the Secretary of Defense race.
