  29. I think Mike meant "why can't you use a high-density disk in a
  30. low-density drive (and get *low-density* storage on it)".  And he
  31. was on the right track with the answer; the magnetic coating on
  32. the HD disk has a much higher remanence (or is it coercivity?)
  33. which means that the magnetic flux produced by the low-density
  34. drive heads is too weak to affect it (or at least, too weak to
  35. make a reliable recording).

  37. The opposite also applies; trying to write a low-density floppy
  38. on a high density drive usually doesn't work well, because the
  39. field produced by the head is so strong that it alters several
  40. bits at a time.

  42. ObFloppyHack: changing the drivebelt pulleys on an old 8" floppy
  43. drive to make it run at 300rpm (instead of the 8" rotation rate
  44. of 360rpm), so that it appeared to be a standard 5.25" floppy drive.
