- I play 11's with a plain G on a strat. It's wonderful! I've considered 12's
- but I can never find them in D'Addario, which I'm very partial to. Also, I'm
- not sure I could get a plain G for a 12 set at all.(But as plain strings get
- really large - they tend to have intonation problems - the string starts to
- behave as a rod instead of a wire.) If you play hard, you really should check
- out a heavier string gauge, at least for a while.(I don't necessarily mean only
- if you play hard all the time. If you play softly, but use really hard dynamics
- it will help even more, reducing the portion of your attack that plays sharp.)
-
- If you have a locking trem, you probably want to play 9's because 1- less spring
- tension, and 2- if you insist on a locking trem, 9's or 8's probably fit your
- playing style much better in the first place.
-
- Heavier string gauges will give a thicker tone. And I've found that heavier
- strings and higher action make it much easier to accurately controll my bends -
- instead of just a heave upwards, it's easier to bend intervals cleanly. It
- takes more physical effort, but you cut down on the fretboard space a bend takes.
- It also keeps wrist vibrato from wiggling your high E string off of the edge of
- the fingerboard.
