- I've noticed quite dramatic differences in the way effects sound depending
- on the ordering. Not because of how the effects interact but because of
- the matching of signal levels. For instance, my Roland digital delay
- has -20dB and -35dB inputs and outputs while the Zoom has -10dB inputs
- and outputs. Connecting the delay into the Zooms external inputs results
- in a very weak signal out of the Zoom. Putting the delay before or after
- the Zoom allows matching levels with input signal controls which makes
- for a much less noisy and more "present" sound. I've found that where
- I put a volume pedal in the effects chain makes a similar difference due
- to impedance matches.
- There are also some fairly obvious interactions between effects. A
- volume pedal before a fuzz box results in little fuzz at low volume while
- if you put the volume pedal after the fuzz then even low volume will still have
- fuzz. The weirdest one I've run across was a CS-3 compressor-limiter
- from Boss that wouldn't compress unless it was the last effect in the
- chain.
- I've occasionally tried parallel effects chains also like so:
-
- ___microphone (to pick up sound from room)
- |
- -Equalizer-
- | |
- _____reel to ___|__________
- | reel echo |
- signal----| |---- output
- |______fuzz--flanger--etc.___|
-
- which quickly becomes an interesting exercise in volume control and mixing.
