- Since coming to Germany, time and time again, I have been confronted
- with gothlings here who ardently believe that Satanism is the only
- appropriate spiritual orientation for scenesters. In the States,
- I had always associated that sort of behavior with the Metal
- scene...color me surprised.
-
- The more contact I have with these people, the more disconnected
- I feel with the (self-proclaimed) goth-scene here. I am curious
- as to how common that religious form really is in Gothdom. Is
- it purely theatrical? Aleister Crowly has been trendy for years,
- but I thought interest in him had waned finally...
-
- For me, the mysticism and spirituality of gothic subculture
- has nothing to do with cults or organized religions...it is
- an aesthetic perspective. I personally have always connected
- with Catholic iconography, imagery, etc. Who needs to look
- outside the Church for dark inspiration...what with the
- crucified image of Christ, the death-cults, the witch and
- heretic persecutions all *within* that institution, there
- would seem to be more than enough morbidity, horror,
- mystery to provide endless amusement and entertainment.
- I certainly do not believe in anything that the Church
- teaches, but that does not mean that I do not find its
- symbolism, its art, its tradition deeply fascinating.
- Is not that tradition, that looking back to medieval
- mystery, the very core of the subculture, coupled
- perhaps with elements of Romanticism from the Nineteenth
- Century in Europe (a movement which itself looked
- back to the Middle Ages and the Church for fantastic
- imagery... e.g. ghost-stories and horrific fairy-tales)?
-
- The satanic phenomena here deeply perplexes me. I just
- do not understand the link....Are they all just
- confused children filled with an overabundance of
- Angst or is it truly a part of the scene? Anyone have
- a clue as to the relationship between Gothdom and
- these new cults? I personally fear that they are robbing
- the movement of its majesty, its beauty, its dark
- splendor...
