  17.   I base that statement on the observation that a hit from a 2 handed sword
  18. swung in anger will virtually always be fatal (or at least require major 
  19. surgery--to the tune of reattaching a limb--to repair).  A hit from a SMG, 
  20. on the other hand from a respectable range (say about the top end of short
  21. range for most such guns) can be quite survivable, depending on where the
  22. shot hit and how many rounds were taken.  Also, someone clobbered by a 2-
  23. hander will probably be stopped cold; whereas there are quite a few documented
  24. cases of charging combatants continuing to disembowel troops armed with 
  25. automatic rifles after having been shot several times.
  26.   The main advantage of a gun is not so much its superior damage as its 
  27. improved range over hand weapons.
