  17. The original ASCII standard assigned the up-arrow to (octal) 136 and
  18. the backarrow to (octal) 137.  A revision to the ASCII standard sometime
  19. in the late 1960s changed these to the caret and underscore, respectively.
  20. Naturally, not everyone changed over immediately.
