  13. It is with great hesitancy that I get involved in this flamewar, but one of
  14. Ted's comments really struck a nerve in me.
  15.  
  16. Ted, you said that you "don't care." (towards the end of your posting
  17. regarding your non-association with Omar).  You didn't explain or clarify this
  18. remark.
  19.  
  20. Quite frankly, I think it would be a lot better if you and other people KNEW
  21. when to care and when not to.  It seems to me, Ted, that you make frequent
  22. remarks online that are intended for argument sake, rather than for
  23. elucidation or true, sincere persuasion.  If you don't, with your heart, CARE
  24. about racism, or about Omar's feelings, or about the feelings of fraternity
  25. and sorority members, than you may wish to reconsider the tone and placement
  26. of your public postings.  It often appears that you are simply converting the 
  27. real problems of racism AND the real problems of fraternities into legal 
  28. arguments for the sake of a "challenge," and I for one am truly saddened by
  29. this approach.

  31. Ted, you are not changing minds, you are instead creating hard feelings.  Just
  32. because you see yourself as attacking or belittling others whom you hold in
  33. contempt does not justify your harsh tone and bitter words.

  35. I share some of your concerns about fraternities, even though I am IN a
  36. fraternity.  I share your frustration over racism and bigotry, even though I
  37. realize that my own views may be at times tainted with less than pure and
  38. brotherly thoughts.  I admit that I am not perfect... though I work to
  39. postively shape my character, and the lives of those around me.
  40.  
  41. Proselytizing on the net is not the answer, nor is chastising, name calling,
  42. or flaming.  Real progress is made among consenting, mature people who share
  43. common goals.  It is not achieved by badgering, by demanding an eye for an
  44. eye, nor presentation of proofs in any form.
  45.  
  46. This newsgroup specifically is a place for fun, humor, mystery, and
  47. storytelling.  I do not condone the recent Omar postings, nor do I condone the
  48. responses to these postings, or the alleged actions of racism or their
  49. responses.
  50.  
  51. Instead, I urge all of us to:
  52. 1) Return this group to its original intent
  53. 2) Avoid escalating flame wars publicly
  54.  
  55. I realize that I am being mildly hypocritical by adding yet another
  56. off-topic post to this newsgroup, but I have felt compelled to jot down my
  57. thoughts here, and offer what may be considered a public note to Ted.
  58.  
  59. I welcome e-mail thoughts.  I discourage e-mail flames.
