- I lived in Iowa for my first 22 years, including a 4 year
- stint at Iowa State, and am an avid fisherman.
-
- In the Ames area, the land is FLAT, and not great for making
- ponds and lakes deep enough to survive winter kills. Most of
- my fishing was done around my home town, Oskaloosa. There are
- several good lakes in southern IA which are either county or state
- owned and public. Suggestions: Red Haw, Lake Iowa, Rathbun, Red Rock,
- Keomah, Hawthorne, etc. The smaller lakes are better for beginners.
- All have largemouth, crappie, bluegill, and channel cat (+ carp, and
- bullheads).
-
- The BEST fishing in Iowa, however, is in farm ponds. These are
- scattered all over the country side. Probably half of the owners will
- let you fish in them if you ask. Most of the ponds were originally
- stocked by the state and by law the owners can't refuse to let you
- in, although if you don't ask you will be tresspassing. There is
- some GREAT bass fishing available in these ponds, as well as
- catfish, bluegill, and in some ponds crappie.
-
- Also, don't overlook the rivers. In small, muddy rivers (i.e. the
- Skunk in southern Iowa) there is pretty good catfishing for both
- channel cat and flathead. The best technique is using troll lines
- or ditty poles with live bait or chicken liver overnight. Carp are
- often plentiful also and are great fun to catch on hot summer days.
- Use sweet corn kernels, threaded on the hook.
-
- If you'd like specific details on methods for fishing in Iowa,
- please e-mail me, and I'll help you in any way I can!
