  22. I think that the problem here is that you are trying to fit everything
  23. into one logical whole. Basically I see Tolkien's works as myths that were
  24. told by people of Middle-Earth long after the original happenings. Bilbo,
  25. Frodo and Sam wrote the Red Book of Westmarch. You know what's in it so
  26. nothing more of that, but the original Red Book was lost. The Red Book
  27. that Professor Tolkien used was a copy of Thain's Book and and contained
  28. annotations and corrections by the scholars of Gondor, and many generations
  29. of hobbits. Is it a wonder if there are some errors? (Not hinting that
  30. Bombadil is such an error, of course.)

  32. Besides, there are other creatures in Middle-Earth that seem to be
  33. 'outside' the powers of Valar. Gandalf hints at meeting these at
  34. the deepest dungeons of Moria, while fighting Balrog.

  36. It is this richness that is one of the strengths of Tolkien's works.
  37. Everything doesn't have to be a logical part of something. (This isn't
  38. something Mr. Spock would understand.) And because of this richness,
  39. we cannot talk about one person being 'lawful good' or some other AD&D
  40. character type. So how about forgetting the AD&D stuff when talking 
  41. about Middle-Earth?
