  17. We would like to recommend the piano quintet (g minor, opus 57).
  18. It has got the Stalin prize (year 1941) but in spite of that
  19. it is one his most touching pieces. Although the third part -
  20. scherzo - is most famous and it's fun to see it played,
  21. we prefer the heart-taking fourth part, intermezzo. Far from
  22. being light interplay it builds up a sombre climax.
  23. In a good performance the players must cry several gallons
  24. tears or otherwise they don't understand the universe, life
  25. or anything.

  27. The first two movements are serious with a lot of concentrated
  28. silent, beautiful moments. The change from the second to the third
  29. movement is like a sudden jump from a cathedral to an amusement
  30. park. And then, the fourth movement is a jump back. The fifth
  31. movement ends enigmatically consciously without any clear
  32. solution.

  34. The Fitzwilliam quartet with Vladimir Ashkenazy (Decca) plays
  35. the piece with appropriate feeling and understanding. The
  36. recording contains also lamenting Elegy (a theme from
  37. Lady Macbeth). Hilarious Polka (from the ballet Golden Age)
  38. has its first recording. Highly recommendable!
