- I *really* didn't want to post to this discussion, but I can't
- resist. Dan Quayle has a daughter, doesn't he? What must it be like
- to have your father the butt-of-first-choice when it comes to political
- jokes (for almost 5 years now). Considering what a major figure a
- parent is in a child's life, I would go so far as to say that is more
- traumatizing than a swapped picture in the wee hours of the morning
- on a show whose host is know to be "somewhat biased" against Democrats
- anyway.
-
- Am I saying people shouldn't make fun of DQ? Nope. What I'm saying is
- that you might as well forget making jokes about anyone if you start
- measuring the moral "goodness" of a joke by whether or not a child
- will be hurt by it. All we can hope is that career polticians raise
- kids who have at least a vague understanding of what the American
- political process is all about.
-
- As another data point: Years ago Al Franken did that SNL sketch where
- he called Fred Silverman a lame-o and went into great detail about
- how Fred had done such a pitiful job at NBC that he didn't deserve the
- limo NBC provides upper executives. Silverman, a fully-grown adult, was
- watching SNL with his kids when that bit aired.
-
- While I wish Silverman's kids hadn't seen it that way (as I bet
- Franken does, as well) it was a _joke_ (unfortunately for Silverman,
- one with more than a grain of truth, tho). In the case we're discussing,
- the picture swap is ostensibly an accident, the child involved has
- *got* to be no stranger to political business-as-usual (unlike most
- network exec's kids), and I find it unlikely she was sitting there
- watching the show when suddenly the mix-up occured.
-
- In the end, I think there's enough to get worked up about in the
- _content_ of Rush's shows without having to go ballistic about the
- accidents.
