- >=o ABC News reports that two researchers have concluded that
- >=listening to country-western music "tends to promote suicidal
- >=tendencies." Stephen Stack of Wayne State University and Jim
- >=Gunlock of Auburn examined data from 49 cities and found that the
- >=higher the percentage of country western music played on the
- >=radio, the higher the incidence of suicide among caucasians.
- >=
- >=Gunlock says that the fact that blacks don't listen to CW music
- >=tends to indicate that it is the music which is the contributing
- >=factor. He added that most people underestimate how much their
- >=environment influences their behavior, and he pointed to "how one
- >=of the leading factors in country western music is sadness."

- You know, the great liberal "approach" to education in this country is that
- we don't want students to memorize useless facts, we want them to learn to
- think. How well has this worked in practice, ie how well do products of this
- education process actually think? Here we have two "researchers", presumably
- educated, claiming that higher incidence of suicide is correlated with the
- playing of country/western music. Therefore, they conclude, country/western
- music causes suicide. Perhaps, while they were learning to think, they forgot
- to learn the "correlation implies causation" fallacy. One of these researcher
- claims that "blacks don't listen to CW music". Maybe he forgot about the
- "sweeping generalization" fallacy. Another sweeping generalizaton: "one of
- the leading factors in country music is sadness". All in all, we may want to
- reconsider the strict memorization approach to education.
