- Not entirely true, Peter. I saw a Boulton & Watt beam pumping engine (of
- 1830 odd!) working this spring. It is one of a pair used to pump water from
- a reservoir to a higher section of canal until the 50's and is now run by
- enthusiasts. It used the weight of the pump-pistons to pull back the beam
- after the power stroke and, as such, needs no flywheel.

- The condenser worked on the /power/ stroke, though. The lower half of the
- cylinder is filled with steam as the piston rises. Condenser water is then
- introduced as steam is introduced into the top half. With a piston about
- three feet in diameter you get a fair amount of shove, even at the *9psi*
- the boilers produced. This pair of engines can pump a ton of water every
- 10 seconds or so each!
