- The "condenser". Previously, the exhausted steam was vented to the athmosphere.
- With the condenser you (a) don't need to feed a river into your steam engine
- (which makes it more efficient, and practical for transport), and (b) the
- condensing steam pulls the piston back up. It still needs a flywheel, but
- it's not nearly as important. And, yes, it was apparently condensing steam
- from a kettle that set him off on the right track.
