  20. Anne has email access on CompuServe.  You can get there via InterNet,
  21. but UseNet doesn't (well, a few groups do, but not most).  She also
  22. doesn't have *time* to read the newsgroups (hell, *I* don't have time -
  23. it takes me around 4 hours a day just to go through the few groups I
  24. take, plus CompuServe, plus another system...).

  26. I believe that the explanation of why green dragons aren't fertile (but
  27. green firelizards are) is that it's a bug in the genetic structure -
  28. ISTR that in DragonsDawn it said that golds couldn't chew firestone (by
  29. design - Kitti Pring didn't want them getting injured fighting Thread),
  30. and that greens were intentionally sterile as they would only produce
  31. smaller dragons anyway.  By 9th Pass, the myth had grown up that greens
  32. were infertile *because* they chewed firestone (F'lar makes a comment to
  33. the effect of "It's a good thing greens aren't fertile otherwise we'd be
  34. overrun with small dragons"), but that's ignorance on the part of the
  35. people...

  37. On a related topic, what (human) birth control is available on Pern?
  38. Lessa mentions that "The hold girls are convinced it's immoral to abort"
  39. - how do they do abortions?  There's no invasive surgery on Pern.  Is
  40. there a natural drug?  How about prevention - is there a natural
  41. contraceptive drug?  (There is in Valdemar, but that's a different
  42. universe).  The 'rhythm' method won't work, when a dragon could rise at
  43. any time...
