- A few comments on laserdisc viewing of WOSAT. There is, as far as I know,
- only one edition of the disc, distributed by Image Entertainment. There are
- no "liner notes" so to speak, just a blurb on the back cover. For best
- enjoyment, do view this on a player which has "special effects for CLV discs",
- so you can single-step through the subliminals. But as Mike noted, you will
- only see every other frame this way, and worse, the "pan-and-scan" transfer
- means that the sides of the image are chopped off and you miss some things.
- Still, it's enjoyable.
-
- If you're looking for a player, there are a number of good choices out there.
- Pioneer is the market leader and has been "keeping the faith" in the format
- for over a dozen years. The model I would recommend is the CLD-D701, which
- I believe is their cheapest one that has the CLV special effects. (If you
- don't get this feature, you can't step through the subliminals.) You may
- find last year's models available at lower prices, such as the CLD-3090.
- You may also be able to buy a used version of an earlier model such as
- the CLD-3070 or the CLD-3030 (I own the latter). If you are buying a used
- model, run it through its paces before committing; the mechanical parts tend
- to fail first, and the older models are less reliable than the newer in this
- regard.
-
- Though a number of other companies make good players (Sony, Panasonic,
- Philips), the CLV special effects feature is rare and confined to the
- more expensive models. Expect to pay at least $800 for a model with this
- feature. If you can do without it, a number of models are available from
- under $500, with some "closeouts" going as low as $250.
-
- But be warned - buying a laserdisc player after only having watched video
- tapes is like buying a CD player after only listening to scratchy records;
- you'll be spoiled for anything less. I only buy movies on LD now (it's
- cheaper than tapes) and find it painful to have to watch a tape!
