  26. the book ended with travis shooting an apparently healthy yeller, beacuse 
  27. yeller had been mauled by a rabid wolf and was sure to get rabies himself. 
  28. travis begged his mom to wait and see, and was told something like"don't be
  29. gross, we don't want to see poor yeller get rabid".  so travis shot him anyway
  30. (sob).

  32. the movie ended with mom and travis deciding to wait and see, yeller going 
  33. all nasty and almost killing travis' rotten kid brother arliss, who didn't
  34. understand why yeller was locked up and tried to release him, and *then* 
  35. travis shooting yeller.  rather than sanitising the book, disney added 
  36. scenes of yeller being a nasty rabid would-be killer.

  38. the new puppy wasn't from yeller's former owner(in the book anyway, i forget
  39. how the movie went.)  in the book he was given to travis by a neighbor girl, 
  40. from a litter her bluetick had had which was sired by yeller.  the pup
  41. in the movie looked something like old yeller and was called "young yeller".
  42. in the book he was a liver and white spotted houndy looking dog named 
  43. "savage sam", the eponymous hero of the sequel, in which travis, arliss,
  44. and the neighbor girl were kinapped by indians and saved by sam.

  47. i recently reread the books, since i got a bluetick myself less than two years
  48. ago, and remembered a bluetick in the book.  i've never seen the whole movie,
  49. but sometime in the last decade i saw the ending on tv while flipping channels.
