- On a similar note, who else do all of you Parrotheads listen to?
-
- I mean, often when I'm listening to Jimmy, I think "How is it possible that
- this guy isn't a world renown superstar? Pity the poor souls that haven't
- been lucky enough to come across his music." The next logical though is, if
- Jimmy is out there doing great things and so many people are completely unaware
- of it, what else is happening out there that I'M unaware of. SO, who else
- do Parrotheads hold in high esteem?
-
-
- A few of my favorites are:
-
- Bruce Cockburn - Canadian, primarily acoustic, excellent guitarist, excellent
- in concert. Generally political ("If I had a Rocket Launcher"). Very
- poetic "The last light of day crept away like a drunkard after gin",
- very human, philosophically very forward looking, great voice..
- His last album "Nothing but a Burning Light" was very strong. Acoustic.
- It has somewhat of a desert/west kind of vibe about it (not country andi
- western though). It contains a song about Kit Carson and the moral
- implications of slaughtering Indians. It has a delight of a song that
- tells the christmas story, but using modern language and attitudes
- (Roman soldiers are death squads, the wise men are astrologers). The
- last song on the album, "A Child of the Wind", is nothing short of
- devine inspiration, and has a very Buffett attitude. Other great
- albums include "Dancing in the Dragons Jaws", "Big Circumstance","Night
- Vision", "Stealing Fire", "World of Wonders", many more.
-
- Cowboy Junkies - Also Canadian. The group is formed around 3 members of the
- Timmons family. One Brother plays guitars and writes most of the music,
- Margo sings, a second brother plays the drums. Basically acoustic,
- including harmonica, acordian, violin(?).
- Their latest album, "Black Eyed Man" is great. I'm not a musician, but
- to me the music is basically rock and roll type songs, but using
- basically C&W instrumentation, and lyrics which have content.
- "Murder Tonight in the Trailer Park" is an especially strong song. "The
- Trinity Sessions" is another great album of theirs.
-
- John Prine - I'm not familiar with a lot of his music, but his album "The
- Missing Years" is great. Acoustic in nature. Has a wit about it which
- is somewhat similar to Buffett. A harder edge though. Songs about
- divorce and the end of relationships. Melocically speaking, "Unlonely"
- is a great song on the album. It features Bonnie Raitt on backup
- vocals, and has a really nice guitar solo by David Lindley. I know that
- Prine and Steve Goodman were good friends. I wonder if he and Jimmy
- run in some of the same circles.
-
- Randy Newman - Like most of his music, "Land of Dreams" has an old fashion kind
- of feel about it. Very Lyrical. Social Commentary. Black Humor. Very
- addictive. Even, you won't believe it, an enjoyable rap song.
-
- Neville Brothers - Check em out.
-
- Little Feat - Of course (Old Little Feat, that is).

- Is anyone else willing to share the diamonds that they've come across?
