  13. This newsgroup was formed so that fans of Howard Stern can discuss the
  14. happenings on the show, the comings and goings, and other activities
  15. of Howard Stern.  Some folks don't like Howard Stern.  We know that.
  16. You don't have to take time out of your busy schedule to tell us that.
  17. The answer here is the same as Howard's answer:  If you don't like it,
  18. turn the dial, switch bands, change the station, find another
  19. newsgroup.

  21. Frequently asked questions about Howard Stern:

  23. 1.  Who is Howard Stern?  (Frequently heard from NONUS folks.)
  24. 1a. Howard Stern is a radio personality.  He came to national
  25.     attention in the USA while working in New York, and currently
  26.     resides there.  He also has a syndicated TV show.  He is
  27.     frequently labeled a 'shock jock'.  Your immediate thought might
  28.     be, "Oh, like xxxxxx (insert name of local shock jock in wherever
  29.     you are)."  No, xxxxxx is like Howard Stern.  He has been around
  30.     for years, he is well known, and chances are that this week xxxxxx
  31.     is doing whatever Howard was doing last week.  If xxxxxx has the
  32.     balls.

  34. 2.  What station does Howard Stern's TV show play on in my area?
  35. 2a. The Howard Stern TV show no longer exsists.  You may be able
  36.     to catch some re-runs on your local station.  Howard has a new
  37.     show on the E! network.

  39. 3.  Howard has a new TV show? What is it? When is it? Where is it?
  40. 3a. Howard's new TV show is a one-on-one interview show.  This show
  41.     dones not include the whole gang, just Howard.  The show is on the 
  42.     E! Cable Network, and will be played multiple times during each month.
  43.     The E! network is also known as the "Entertainment Network", not to be
  44.     confused with "Arts and Entertainment".  If you dont get the E! 
  45.     network, your outta luck.

  47. 4.  Where can Howard be received on the Radio?
  48. 4a. New York, NY (WXRK-FM, 92.3)

  63. 5.  I'm not in any of those places.  Is there a satellite feed for
  64.     WXRK?
  65. 5a. Yes, WXRK is broadcast by SCPC on Hughes Galaxy 2 channel 03.
  66.     Again, you will need to be able to decode this feed, and you
  67.     should ask your dish dealer, or in rec.video.satellite, how to
  68.     decode it.

  70. 6.  How can one be expected to figure out who is who among the
  71.     regulars on the show?
  72. 6a. Listen for a while.  Want to take a shortcut?  Here is an effort
  73.     to explain:

  75.     Howard Stern - The head of the asylum.  The ruler of the roost,
  76.     the King on NY Radio, and other points.
  77.  
  78.     Robin Quivers - Howard's sidekick.  Officially his news reporter,
  79.     she is also the confidant and instigator in many cases, and also
  80.     (occasionally) feeds him lines from the privacy of her news
  81.     studio.  Her news reports normally consist of reading the paper,
  82.     and a few things that are put together by her interns.  None the
  83.     less, the news reports are frequently the most entertaining part
  84.     of the show, as Howard comments on everything.

  86.     Fred Norris, King of Mars - Fred handles sound effects (paints)
  87.     and also keeps the show on schedule.  When Howard started
  88.     broadcasting in NY, frequently he would just push off the
  89.     commercials for an hour.  Now that they are syndicated, he has to
  90.     take breaks at regular intervals.  Fred cracks the whip.  He is on
  91.     the writing team.  Fred also does voices for the occasional (these
  92.     days) radio 'movie' and as the Nazi in the 'Guess who's the Jew'
  93.     bits.

  95.     Jackie (The Jokeman, Penthouse Jokepage) Martling - Jackie is a
  96.     comic who never quite made it big, notably because his standup
  97.     isn't very good IMHO.  He writes full time for the Howard Stern
  98.     show, and makes a fair bit of money doing local appearances as
  99.     well, pushed by plugs from the show.  One wonders when he sleeps.
  100.     Maybe during the show.  +1 516 922 WINE gets you a schedule of his
  101.     upcoming appearances, and it is a normal toll call (no 900 style
  102.     surcharge) but has a few ads.  There is more than 30 minutes of
  103.     material on the new all-digital line.  He is also on the writing
  104.     team, as the head writer.

  106.     Gary (Baba Booey) Dell'Abate (sp?) - The show's producer.  He
  107.     arranges guests, insures that the office part of the show gets
  108.     done, and so forth.  For those of you who've read Gulliver, he is
  109.     also Howard's chief flapper - he is generally the one who makes
  110.     the judgment as to whether or not someone speaks to Howard when
  111.     they call up with a beef.  He is called Baba Booey after his
  112.     mispronunciation of Baba Looey, Quick Draw McGraw's sidekick on
  113.     the Hanna-Barbera cartoon show.  He was buying animation cels,
  114.     and didn't know how to pronounce the name of the character,
  115.     despite professing fandom.  Gary does occasional personal
  116.     appearances, for which he gets plugs.

  118.     John (Stuttering John) Melandez - Hero of the stupid.  A paid
  119.     performer on Channel 9, officially on WXRK he is just an intern.
  120.     He is paid in notoriety (he gets to plug his band appearances and
  121.     occasional personal appearances, and might yet get a record
  122.     contract because of his connections) and is typically sent out to
  123.     interview celebrities.  The questions are all prepared, but
  124.     sometimes he gets to adlib.

  126.     Scott the Engineer - mixes tapes, inserts the bleeps so that you
  127.     can still hear the cursing in the background, and is hapless when
  128.     it comes to fixing the console.  He is employed by WXRK as Chief
  129.     Engineer, and he is in the Union.  He is making additional money
  130.     because he gets a daily plug, which he has used to build up a DJ
  131.     business.  He has a number of DJ's who work for him and provide
  132.     canned music for parties, weddings (Gary will soon be married and
  133.     will use Scott's service, Rocket Entertainment) and so forth.
  134.     This is good, because Scott smokes like a chimney and I wouldn't
  135.     want him at one of my parties.

  137. 7.  How can you listen to someone who is as racist/homophobic/anti
  138.     woman/etc. as Howard Stern?
  139. 7a. You just don't get it, do you?  Howard is none of those things, in
  140.     spades: He is an equal opportunity denigrator.  Sooner or later he
  141.     will kick one of your sacred cows in the balls, to mix metaphors
  142.     in an udderly improbable manner.  But he is still very funny.
  143.     Someone on this newsgroup once said that a lot of Howard's humor
  144.     comes from the sort of attitude that says, "Look at all of this
  145.     crap in the world around us!  Isn't it wierd?  Isn't it funny?
  146.     Sit in our circle and we'll let you in on the joke."  Well, some
  147.     of us think that we get the joke.

  149. 8.  Is Howard Stern half Jewish?
  150. 8a. Definitely.  The question is, what is the other half?  According
  151.     to Howard, it is not Jewish, perhaps WASP.  However, several alert
  152.     readers of alt.fan.howard-stern believe that (with some reasonable
  153.     proof), in fact, the other half is Jewish, and that the half-Jewish 
  154.     identity is something that Howard puts on so that he can insult
  155.     both Christians and Jews with impunity.  However, he is equally
  156.     free with insults of Muslims, Hindus, etc., and does not claim to
  157.     be partially Muslim, so I, personally, don't know who to believe.
