  21. Well, in fairness to the American people, the series of scandals known
  22. collectively as "Watergate" mostly either became public knowledge or
  23. else occurred after Nixon's re-election. The Watergate break-in occurred
  24. before the election, but it wasn't until after the election that the
  25. break-in and subsequent cover-up was traced to key Nixon aides and to
  26. Nixon himself. Other Watergate-related scandals such as the break-in of
  27. Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office being traced to Republican campaign
  28. workers, the Republican dirty tricks, and the White House "enemies list",
  29. did not become public knowledge until after the election. All of the
  30. Senate and House testimony, plus the evidence which resulted from the
  31. special prosecutor's investigation, the sum of which uncovered the heart
  32. of the scandals, happened after the election, as did related events such
  33. as the "Saturday night massacre", the release of Nixon's tapes and the
  34. discovery of the "eighteen minute gap".

  36. I think it's a testimony to the American system that a man like Nixon,
  37. who carried 49 states with 521 electoral votes in his re-election, had
  38. to resign in disgrace less than two years later when the truth about
  39. him and his aides became known.
