  20. he could do it without appearing desperate, disloyal, and totally
  21. motivated by political concerns. The only thing that saved Dan was that
  22. polls showed higher negatives for dumping him than keeping him. Yes,
  23. George's first "presidential" appointment, his reckless moment of
  24. independence from all of Reagan's and his own advisors in 1988, came
  25. back to haunt him in a terrible lose-lose scenario in 1992.
