- Tell that to the citizens of New York City who take the subway to and from
- work each day. I think that public transit will work if it is more
- convenient than driving; this is the key. If your city suffers from
- constant gridlock, you will use a subway or light rail system if such is
- available. Alternative fuels and electric vehicles won't do a thing to
- fight traffic congestion. I don't know what the traffic is like in San
- Antonio, but I'm living in LA, and the highways are hell. I'd gladly use
- public transportation if there were a decent system here.
-
- I worked in the Tokyo area over this past summer, and made extensive use of
- the rail and subway systems there; there is really nowhere in the city you
- can't go by hopping on a subway and walking for maybe ten minutes. The
- roads are much slower. Most of the Japanese I knew had cars, but they only
- used them when neccessary, such as when they had to take a lot of stuff
- with them.
-
- Public transportation is really essential for large urban areas like
- NYC, LA, or my home town, Seattle. We just can't afford the space for
- everyone to get where they are going by car. A person sitting on a train
- takes much less space than a car.
