- What are the chances that Dan Quayle will someday be president of the
- U.S.? Slim to none if history is any guide, assuming Bush survives until
- January 20.
-
- Quayle is the 44th vice president of the U.S. Fourteen veeps, almost
- one third, have become president. But nine of those succeeded to the
- office on the death or resignation of the former occupant. Only five
- (Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren, Nixon, Bush) were elected in their own
- right, and only three after the passage of the 12th Amendment in 1804
- for all practical purposes relegated the office of vice president to
- the level of a political appointment. Only one veep (Nixon) was elected
- president subsequent to leaving the office of vice president, and to
- date no veep has become president after being on a losing ticket with
- an incumbent president.
