  24. Let me join the swelling throng of those vainly urging you to 
  25. use your hear for something other than a hatrack.

  27. Please try to get at least a few facts right in future postings
  28. (though I admit that two errors in only three lines takes real
  29. talent).

  31. Gore stated, *not* in his book, that the automobile is among the 
  32. greatest threats to the environment we have. Not as an object,
  33. but in the manufacture and use therein, with all the attendant
  34. industries it requires.

  36. Petroleum especially comes to mind. Air pollution from the cars
  37. themselves. Pollution of various sorts from refineries. Oil spills.
  38. Toxic runoff from roads and highways. Leaks from service-station
  39. tanks. Old motor oil fouling sewage systems. Our endlessly growing 
  40. dependency on imported Middle-East oil, and our corresponding loss 
  41. in national security. All from our ceasless hunger for individual
  42. automobiles.

  44. Not even mentioned, because it's been cleaned up thanks to the efforts 
  45. of bleedinghearts like myself, is the tragic mental retardation of a 
  46. generation of city-dwellers from breathing and eating the lead-based 
  47. exhausts from older cars burning leaded gasoline.

  49. And how about the vast mining and smelting enterprises needed to
  50. support the auto industry's demand for new parts? The volatiles
  51. from automobile paint? Auto air conditioners leaking CFCs into the
  52. atmosphere, damaging the ozone layer? Even, fer chrissakes, the
  53. HUGE piles of worn-out tires and crushed car hulks filling our
  54. dumps and landfills?

  56. Glass manufacture for windows and windshieds, other than the pollution
  57. generated to produce the power needed, seems relatively clean.

  59. Oh, and *as* an object, cars are responsible for the deaths each year
  60. of more Americans than died in the entire Viet Nam conflict.

  62. Despite which Bill Clinton is not afraid to ride in one. Talk about
  63. real heroism. Kinda puts the lie to all those Bush/Quayle apologists
  64. who think that Bill's war protests were a sign of cowardice...:^)
