-
- Well, it's in Dole's own best interests to try to stand
- as firm as possible *before* Clinton is sworn in, in the
- hopes of a) getting concessions from the new Administration,
- b) reviving his battered image as a Republican leader of the
- incoming Senate, c) supressing the mewling and puking of the
- last twelve years that might otherwise be heard from other
- would-be Republican leaders in both Senate and House (Newt
- Gingrich and Bob Dornan come to mind as particularly odious
- examples), and only lastly d) fueling ambitions for 1996.
-
- Of course, it shoots his credibility to hell, but he's undoubtedly
- banking on the short attention span of the typical American voter.
-
- I heard his comments several times over the weekend on various
- NPR broadcasts of Morning Edition and All Things Considered.
- Appropriately, they were shortly followed each time by an interview
- with the Reverend (?) Jerry Falwell, whose own amusing brand of
- contradictory mewling and puking will apparently *not* be silenced
- for the next four (hopefully 16) years.
