- Do you categorically dislike Madison, Mike, or do you just think they were
- scored too high in 1988?
-
- 1988 was a very interesting year. Scouts had taken several weeks off
- for a tour of Europe. When they returned, one week before DCM
- Championshiops, they clearly were off the pace of the other corps. I
- believe that Scouts placed *5th* (at best, 4th) at the DCM
- Championships. They did a huge amount of polishing and cleaning over
- the 2nd tour...it did not look at all possible for Scouts to win DCI
- that year.
-
- The second noteworthy thing that year was Phantom's attempted use of
- the Pit area for the Horn Line ... and hearing from DCI a couple of
- weeks before nationals that they couldn't do it. I really like that
- change now, but it caused some scrambling for Phantom's staff to
- re-design that part of their show on such short notice.
-
- Anyhow, I absolutely loved Nationals that year, and Scouts were a big
- part of the fun. Among other things, Madison won brass ensemble and
- mallots at Individuals with some really neat performances (question:
- where is that incredible Madison keyboard player today??). They
- marched in the parade with their marvelous arrangement of The Stars
- and Stripes Forever (including the great Piccolo Soprano solo). The
- Individuals Concert was much smaller than it is today...very intimate
- and special.
-
- My point is that Scouts did it all in 1988. They thoroughly
- entertained the fans all week, and it was appreciated.
-
- I understand Garfield's incredible work ethic, but, for me, something
- is lost when Garfield doesn't participate in Individuals. And I don't
- know if the Blue Devils know how it hurts the perception of their
- corps when they win various Individuals titles but don't always
- consistently allow the players to perform at the Concert.
-
- To the true fan, individuals are an important part of Championship
- Week. I love the Scouts for their committment to entertain those fans
- (and have fun while doing it). The fact that they were able to win it
- all with such style in 1988 was just outstanding.
