- Flashback shows and repeated music have been very successful (Cadets 90,
- SCV 89, etc.), although this year's batch did poorly. If something new
- can be brought to the piece, it is still exciting to watch. On the other
- hand, the music itself might not be difficult enough by today's standards.
- Fiddler, IMHO, was a lot of fun to watch, but musically was not in the
- same league as Cuban Fire or the Perilous Skies. I felt the lower scores
- received by "blast from the past" shows this year was justified by the
- difficulty and execution of their competitor's products.
-
- Scott is right that a show is gone for good after finals. But redoing the
- music never recaptures exactly what was great about the original performance
- One of the best things about drum corps is that after the season is over, the
- shows will always be owned by their performers. There are only 128 people who
- ever got to create the 1987 Cadets or the 1991 Star of Indiana or any of the
- GREAT shows, and there is every reason to try to create some original
- moments rather than recapturing the past.
-
- When I was at the Cadets, some older members were critical of the 1990 show
- because it used a fair amount of repeated material. They were certainly proud
- of their performance, but the sentiment was that it just wasn't as exciting
- to do Candide because it had already been done in '85. They enjoyed the
- parts of the show that were new for the corps.
-
- I'd be interested to hear what it's like to watch your (or another) corps
- redo your show, or to march a show that is a corps tradition.
