- In article <1dumfcINNogj@grapevine.EBay.Sun.COM> greg@antizen.EBay.Sun.COM writes:
- >Ephedrine is the oral form of Epinephrine, or adrenaline.
-
- This is wrong. It's a different drug.
-
- >It was once a commonly prescribed drug for asthma, but newer drugs in the
- >xanthine class have less side effects.
-
- Newer drugs in the adrenergic class have fewer side effects, and work
- directly on beta-adrenergic receptors. Ephedrine works indirectly by
- enhancing release of norepinephrine at adrenergic synapses. In clinical
- use, it loses its therapeutic efficacy rapidly in asthma. The only xanthine
- used against asthma is theophylline, which isn't new, and has its own
- spectrum of toxicity and side effects.
-
- >Ephedrine is related to pseudoephedrine which was designed as a
- >decongestant with less undesirable effects.
-
- "Chosen" would be a better word. There are 4 positional isomers of
- ephedrine. Two of them (l-ephedrine and d-pseudoephedrine) are in
- common use. "Ephedrine" sold in stores is l-ephedrine. d-pseudoephedrine
- causes less central stimulation than l-ephedrine, and is said to be
- less potent as a bronchodilator. It's in common use as a nasal
- decongestant.
-
- >Ephedra is a Chinese herb that's been used for centuries to treat asthma.
-
- Which contains l-ephedrine, and some amount of d-pseudoephedrine.

-
- Some pharmacists will not sell it to "questionable" customers, and it's
- an Rx-only drug in some states.
