- I got to play Dactyl Nightamre for something like 17 minutes. It was
- really quite enteretaining. As a coach, I got to observe many different
- people experience VR for the first time. Some would really get into it
- and otheres would be held up by the fact that the helmet wouldn't always
- fit perfectly, and glasses would fog up. Some people just couldn't
- figure out that the joystick/gun would change pitch if they tilted their
- hand. It was almost too real in that sense. People were not able to
- understand that they were in a truly artificial environment.
- As for the setup of the system, they would not get too specific
- (something about their liscence or something). Anyway, each pod used
- the equivalent of three Amiga 3000's to run the software. The
- positioning of the helmet and joystick was accomplished by having three
- sensors inside of each and running an electromagnetic current through
- the ring around the pod. If someone stuck their arm too far out, it
- would dissapear from the VR world. I'm not sure if the three sensors
- were for the three dimensions or triangulation, or if there is a
- difference between the two.
- Besides for a few things that need to be smoothed out, the
- experience was very gratifying. I would imagine that in the future more
- improvements will be made to increase the response time for the
- environment, and better graphics will be developed.
- I hope some of this was useful/interesting.
