- We celebrated Deepavali on last Saturday (Nov 14) evening. The India
- Students Association is very active in University of Oklahoma and a
- crowd of at least six hundred people turned up for the show. The
- function started at 6.00 pm and went on till the ISA Band concluded the
- celebrations with a nostalgic collection of popular Indian songs.
-
- The main attraction of the show was a play "Ramayana". The plot starts
- with Ram, Laxman and Sita living in the forest to fulfill the wishes of
- their father. Ravana disguises as a sage and abducts Sita to Lanka. The
- play ends with Ram killing Ravana in the war and the victorious return
- of Ram to the palace. It is said that people welcomed the return of Ram
- and Sita with lighted lamps in their houses starting the festival known
- as Deepavali.
-
- There was a scene in the Asoka Van in Ravana's palace. The demons
- torture Sita and try to compel her to marry Ravana. "Ha.. ha.. ha..
- ha..". Ravana enters the stage with a terrible laugh and looking at the
- lovesick Sita. "Ding..." Ravana's big black moustache fell on the ground
- without any kind of warnings. The already merry crowd burst into a
- thundering laughter. In the mean time Ravana tried to fix his 'konban
- meeSa' and act again. "Ding.."; again. There was a blackout on the stage
- and that scene was redone.
-
- The whole play was a success. Let me be honest with you all ackers. I
- was the actor in the role of Ravana.
