- Ramayana epic that is famous in Indonesia is Walmiki's version.
- When I was a dancer at the Prambanan Ramayana theatre 10 years ago,
- I saw a motto by Walmiki on the wall. If I'm not mistaken, it says:
-
- As mountains still erupt
- and rivers still flow
- Ramayana epic still exists
-
- The main characters in RAMAYANA
- are Rama, Rahwana or Dasamuka (10 faces), Lesmana, Hanoman, Shinta,
- and Kumbokarna. Also a giant eagle (I forget the name) was important
- in the story. Rahwana is a king in Alengka. Maybe Indonesian version
- is a bit different in the meaning of each part of play....There are
- 4 parts in the play ( as it's played in Prambanan theatre):
- 1. Shinta is kidnapped
- 2. Hanoman is burnt
- 3. Kumbokarna dies and
- 4. Shinta is burnt
-
- In the story, Kumbokarna is portrayed as a good beast. He never
- intended to kill anyone who invades his country (Rama and some
- creatures-monkeys, eagles, etc) but knowing that his country is being
- destroyed, he just defend it till he dies. In fact, he refused to fight
- Rama in the beginning of the invasion.
-
- That's it for now
-
-
- Regards,
-
- Bagong.....
