  13. I am just getting into HK films thanks to all the attention given
  14. to them in this newgroup and just thought I'd give my $0.02 worth
  15. regarding the movies I rented and saw this weekend. All of these
  16. have been highly reccomended in acm. So far I have seen Once Upon 
  17. A Time In China I & II, A Chinese Ghost Story I, II, & III, The
  18. Terracotta Warrior, and A Better Tommorrow.

  20. I rented The Swordsman I & II and Jackie Chan's Armour of God II:
  21. Operation Condor.

  23. The Swordsman I&II stars Jet Li as a swordsman. Typical Tsui Hark
  24. production values - excellent special effects. Oh how I wish my
  25. copy was letterboxed ! Pan and scan does not do any Tsui Hark movie
  26. justice. Some light comedy and romance thrown in but generally a
  27. little darker and more gruesome than the OATIC and ACGS series.
  28. There were few closeups of Jet Li's face - I really enjoyed his
  29. expressions in OATIC. Usually he has such an innocent expression
  30. on his face, but when he gets pissed, watch out ! Does anyone have
  31. a filmography of Jet Li ? I also rented and watched Martial Arts of
  32. Shaolin which I think he was in.

  34. The Swordsman I&II were subtitled. Armour of God II was not, but
  35. was letterboxed. Still, this did not present much of a problem
  36. since the plot was fairly straightforward. This film is kind of
  37. a cross between James Bond and Indiana Jones. Some excellent action
  38. scenes - motorcycle/car chases, fight scenes, etc.. Lots of humour
  39. as to 2 women vie for Jackie's affection. Watch the out-takes at
  40. then end - they give some insight into how these action movies are
  41. filmed.

  43. Overall I found Swordsman entertaining but not as good as OATIC and
  44. ACGS. The plot is a little more involved - I plan to rent these again
  45. though. Without letterboxing the excellent fight scenes become too
  46. jumbled. I really enjoyed AOGII though - an excellent blend of action
  47. and comedy. Don't let the lack of subtitles stop you - the plot is
  48. quite obvious.
