-
- I watched AN AUTUMN'S TALE just last weekend. I thought it was very
- good, although the story resolved itself in the "bittersweet" way of
- (apparently) all HK romantic comedies. (I suppose that's not a valid
- complaint -- might as well complain about the happy endings of screwball
- comedies). This is about a Chinese immigrant in New York (Chow) and
- his rather tentative relationship with his cousin (Sylvia Chang) who is
- attending college in the U.S. Low key and charming.
-
- DAYS OF BEING WILD is one of my favourite HK films. Although there is a
- small amount of violence, its focus is on a young man (Leslie Cheung)
- who is unable to develop meaningful relationships because he was
- abandoned by his mother when he was a child. After destroying two
- promising relationships he goes to the Phillipines to find his mother,
- where things don't work out as expected. Although the plot is a bit of
- sub-Freud, it is surprisingly believable. The writer/director (Wong Ka
- Fai) made another film called (I believe) AS TEARS GO BY and, according
- to Variety, wrote SAVIOUR OF THE SOUL.

- Has anyone seen AS TEARS GO BY? I think it stars Andy Lau and Jackie
- Cheung, and could well be available under a different title.
