- `iobelaios', fr. Heb. `yobel' ram's horn, trumpet; jubilee
- confused with L. `jubilum'a shout (ie.jubilate).]

- 1. In this sense spelled, in the A.V. & R.V. of the English
- Bible, `jubile'. Jewish Hist. An institution, a sort of
- exalted sabbatical year, the record of whose ordination
- is contained in Lev. xxv. 8-17, which was to be kept every
- fiftieth year (i.e. the year following the completion of the
- seventh sabbatical year), its announcement to be by the sound
- of the trumpet on the Day of Atonement. It was to be observed
- by the liberation of all slaves who were Hebrews, the resto-
- ration to their former owners of all lands which had been
- alienated during the whole period, and by omission of sowing
- and reaping of any kind and even the gathering of grapes.
