  23. And that, of course, was what were the high halcyon days of this
  24. under George Bush, when he was the Director of the Central
  25. Intelligence Agency, and a little bit earlier when Richard Nixon
  26. was the President of the United States. And when you have that kind
  27. of attitude toward the rest of the world, it becomes inevitable, of
  28. course, that that kind of infection tends to feed back into the
  29. domestic policies of the United States, such that you have Richard
  30. Nixon engaging the "Plumbers" unit, and the others who began to use
  31. espionage and basically terrorist tactics against the domestic
  32. citizenry of the United States: infiltrating Black civil rights
  33. organizations, the feminist organizations, the anti-war groups.
  34. And, in fact, they began playing dirty tricks on them: writing
  35. false memos, accusing the leaders of certain movements of 
  36. committing adultery, or of having affairs with other people inside
  37. [their organizations]; consciously attempting to disrupt and to
  38. destroy any type of democratic [any LEGAL] citizens' organization
  39. that took a position that was contrary to the position advocated
  40. SECRETLY by the Central Intelligence Agency.
  41.  
  42. That's the kind of infection that is at the heart of the democratic
  43. principles of our nation that we still see manifesting in things
  44. like the Iran-Contra Scandal with Oliver North and Richard Secord
  45. and the others who, in fact, secretly defied all of our democratic
  46. institutions: the resolutions of the Congress, the clearly
  47. enunciated voice of the majority of the people of our country who
  48. did not want to support the Contras in Latin America who were the
  49. former military national guard officers of the dictator Anastasio
  50. Samoza in Nicaragua. And so, these men went underground and
  51. undertook criminal covert warfare which inevitably led them into
  52. seeking illicit sources of money, since they couldn't get it from
  53. the tax monies of the American People. And they ended up
  54. establishing alliances with the Colombian cocaine cartel, that is
  55. still in the news, even as of this morning, with Pablo Escobar
  56. fighting his way out of his own luxury prison to escape.
  57.  
  58. We have this kind of history, tracking all the way from the end of
  59. the Second World War in 1945 and 1946, all the way up to today, the
  60. very day that we're speaking here, with manifestations of this type
  61. of criminal undercover alliance that they have. And it is hacking
  62. at the very heart of the institutions of democracy.

  65. Thank you, Dan, for that explanation.  I'm wondering at what point
  66. we will also begin to connect the corporate structures that function
  67. as a government policy think-tank, frequently in the multi-national
  68. corporations in different countries, that decide that THEIR use of
  69. the natural resources, THEIR use of the cheap labor, THEIR use of
  70. the local population, THEIR general support of the dictators,
  71. all of this is in THEIR economic best interests. And then, if there
  72. is any dissent .... if there is any journalistic dissent, political
  73. dissent, social dissent, that they can then contact THEIR friends
  74. in OUR State Department who then use OUR Defense Department as a
  75. weapon of foreign policy to protect the interests of these
  76. multi-national corporations.

  78. Then they whip the media into a frenzy, always showing THEIR side.
  79. But it is never an honest projection, so that when we do intervene,
  80. we can violate the national sanctity of other countries, just like
  81. we did with Grenada and Nicaragua and El Salvador [worst of all,
  82. with Panama and Iraq] and these other countries.

  84. DANIEL SHEEHAN:
  85. Well, there are a number of very stark examples of this, of course.
  86. Historically, Gary, one of the most transparent is the action
  87. taken against Guatemala in 1954 wherein the United Fruit Company,
  88. a member of the board of directors of which was the Director of
  89. the Central Intelligence Agency, Allen Dulles, the brother of John
  90. Foster Dulles who, in fact, was the Secretary of State of the
  91. United States [under Eisenhower]. His brother, Allen was the
  92. Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and a member of the
  93. board of Directors of United Fruit Company, which owned VAST land
  94. holdings in the country of Guatemala, which had been SEIZED from
  95. the peasants by a major military government that was basically
  96. installed and kept in power by covert means of the Central
  97. Intelligence Agency.
  98.  
  99. When, in fact, the citizenry of Guatemala had organized themselves
  100. and had, in fact, installed a democratic government in Guatemala
  101. under Arbanes[sp], the Central Intelligence Agency coordinated a
  102. major covert alliance with elements of the military in Guatemala
  103. and undertook a military seizure of the government in 1954.
  104. That was coordinated by E. Howard Hunt [paymaster to the assassins
  105. of President Kennedy].
  106.  
  107. Now, that overthrow was, for one of the major reasons, to reinstall
  108. the United Fruit Company because the new democratic government
  109. under Arbanes had begun to question the legitimacy of the United
  110. Fruit Company to hold hundreds of thousands of acres of irrigatable
  111. land under the control of growing bananas for export, instead of
  112. allowing the peasants -- who had originally owned all of that land
  113. which had been illegitimately seized by the military government --
  114. to be reinstated with the possession of their land.
  115.  
  116. So, it was very clear, in that particular instance, that there is a
  117. direct relationship between the economic interests of a privately-
  118. owned, profit-making company, the United Fruit Company, and American
  119. foreign policy, which was undertaken covertly and criminally by the
  120. Central Intelligence Agency, at the helm of which was a member of
  121. the board of directors of the United Fruit Company.
  122.  
  123. Now, those things have happened again and again. We have examples
  124. in Panama. We have examples in, of course, El Salvador, and we have
  125. examples in Nicaragua. There's some very unheralded writing in
  126. books about this. There's a former general of the United States
  127. Marine Corps, a man named Smedley Butler, who led three of the
  128. expeditionary forces of the United States Military into Nicaragua
  129. back during the 1930s. And he eventually -- from direct experience
  130. on the ground -- came to his own personal conclusion that he could
  131. no longer participate in doing those kinds of things because, as he
  132. said, he realized that he was just a gun-thug for Brown Brothers-
  133. Harriman, the major American capital investment corporation.

  142.         and wounded another American journalist, Tony Avirgan.
