- |
- |It has nothing of the sort -- that's the point I'm trying to make.
- |All I'm asking is that before people create groups that they intend to
- |use, they post a note saying, "Hey, folks -- I'm creating
- |alt.such-and-such." I'll go for it. I'll suggest alternative names
- |(especially if the proposed group creates a new top-level hierarchy),
- |and sometimes I become unnecessarily dogmatic about the issues. But I
- |don't turn down any group that I have seen announced in alt.config.
- |
- |I don't see that as being a great thing to ask, nor as something which
- |destroys the spontaneity for which people love alt, and it cuts down
- |considerably on the number of pointless groups that get created.
-
-
- Once again there arises this concept of
- "pointless", as if everyone shared your
- point of view so closely that naturally
- they will agree.
-
-
- I noticed that in the beginning of the
- Manhattan phone book there is a section
- which invites people to register with
- the "Naming Commission", so that little-
- used names might be eliminated in time
- and the phone book would thereby become
- a more effective resource.
-
-
- |>Btw - do you read and post
- |>to altnet groups at all except this one?
- |
- |Yes. If you're asking whether I care about alt and its structure, I
- |wouldn't be doing this if I didn't.
-
-
- Since alt exists specifically as an anarchy,
- everyone is free to enact their own notion
- of what its structure might be (including
- none whatever). Moreover, it is not going
- to stay the same, no matter whose definitions
- seem to apply at any given moment. It's
- probably more accurate to say that there are
- at least as many "alt"'s as there are newsgroups
- in it, and attempts to treat it as a unitary
- objest are not likely to have much practical
- effect.
