- Randolph sips his wine and says, "Speaker--my original comment about
- scientists' rules and god's was a coan, or maybe just a jest. Point
- is, we can't tell the difference between god's rules & our own, so
- science has to be viewed with skepticism. All we ever know--all we
- ever can know through science--are models; no-one ever knows the
- territory--only maps. Through much of the 19th century scientists
- knew--accurately--that atoms were indivisible. Now we
- know--accurately--that atoms are not. Our criteria of accuracy
- changed along with our paradigms. Scientists as a group reject as
- erroneous data which contradicts current paradigms--there has to be a
- new hypothesis before they are willing to change.
-
- "What did you say that implied a fear of change?" Sip. "I'll answer
- that one privately, I think."
