- "pdaxs" is pronounced "pee dee access". It allows free access to
- Usenet and e-mail. "pdaxs" is an 80486 clone running Waffle 1.65
- BBS software which allows the dial-up caller to access (read and
- post to) many usenet groups as well as send and receive e-mail.
-
- When you call, you pick an eight-character account name and can
- use that to send e-mail immediately. You give us your real name and
- address, we mail you a command guide and registration form. You
- return the registration form, we upgrade your account. "pdaxs" has
- access to the major newsgroups: comp, misc, soc, rec, news, talk, and
- sci groups; plus alt, k12, and gnu groups; plus local groups. We
- retain most messages for 10 days, other areas for longer.
-
- Waffle uses English commands to read and send mail and news. You enter
- "mail" to access your mail, "post newsgroup" to post to a particular
- group, and "read newsgroup" to read a particular newsgroup. Waffle has
- a simple line-oriented editor for messages so that you don't have to learn
- vi or emacs. You can also upload an ASCII file via your favorite
- protocol, which is great for composing messages off-line. allows you to maintain your own list of newsgroups,
- has extensive mail handling capabilities (forwarding, aliases, lists,
- and more) and has other neat features that most BBS programs don't.
-
- Personally, I'll give up elm and nn when they pry my cold, dead
- fingers off the keyboard, and many other people swear by rn or
- mush. But what do you want for nothing? And we have several sets
- of parents using it to communicate with their children, so it must
- be fairly easy-to-use.
-
- "pdaxs" operates at 1200 or 2400 baud at 8 data bits, no parity,
- 1 stop bit. The modems all support MNP-5 or lower. The main phone
- number is (503) 220-0636, and there are currently seven other lines
- behind it. Enter "bbs" when confronted with the menacing "login:"
- prompt, then enter "new" to setup a new account.
-
- Having real problems? Call for support anytime at (503) 223-4245
- (you'll get a machine if nobody's in the office), but we know UNIX
- much better than Waffle, so we won't be much help on the fine points
- of Waffle.
-
- "pdaxs" is free. If you'd like additional features, additional
- time, or just want to support public access usenet, you're encouraged
- to subscribe. "Green" subscribers pay $30/year and get 90 minutes a day
- with Waffle, including access to all groups and file directories.
-
- "Silver" subscribers pay $60/year ($20/3 months) and get a shell account,
- download privileges, and more. "Gold" subscribers pay $120/year ($40/3
- months) and get all the benefits of a silver subscription, plus full
- access to the Internet, including ftp, telnet, Internet Relay Chat
- (irc), and Multi-User Dungeon games (muds).
-
- "pdaxs" was originally called "PDaXcess" but that proved too difficult
- to spell. The name is supposed to say three things: that the system is
- in "PDX", the standard abbreviation for Portland; "axs" (originally
- axcess), meaning that anyone can get on; and "PD", meaning that
- it's public domain, or no charge. Mail to either "pdaxs" or "PDaXcess"
- works the same.
