- Yes, but minor. You can use driftwood from the beach or a river,
- stream or lake, and 'cure' it yourself.
-
- The goal is to leach out any toxins, salt, or other stuff that is
- either harmful or unsightly in the aquarium. Further, you need to
- make sure there are no insects or germs on the log, but it doesn't
- have to be totally sterile.
-
- 'Curing' the wood involves soaking it in water (a large plastic tub
- will do, place rocks on the wood to sink it) until the replacement
- water is clear. It may take several weekly changes, and the whole
- process may take several months. I've done this several times with
- success, on wood from both the seashore and fresh water lakes.
-
- As a further step you can add a cup of household bleach to the
- brew, change the water after the chlorine smell disappears, say,
- three or four days. This will kill off the mosquitos, etc. too.
-
- Look for wood that has the bark missing, as this saves peeling
- or scraping it off. To sink the wood in your tank try attaching
- a piece of slate (which can be drilled easily) to it with a screw
- or by using aquarium sealer.
-
- Good luck!
