  23. a diversified *Fortune 500* operating company. He was co-chairman 
  24. of President Reagan's Private Sector Survey on Cost Control, also 
  25. known as the Grace Commission.
  26. -- Dr. Gerald J. Swanson is an Associate Professor of Economics 
  27. at the University of Arizona.

  51. Mr. Figgie begins by declaring that "In 1995, the United States 
  52. of America, as we know it today, will cease to exist. That year, 
  53. the country will have spent itself into a bankruptcy from which 
  54. there will be no return."

  56. Figgie thinks that in the year 1995 the U.S. national debt will 
  57. "...have grown beyond our ability to control it through taxation. 
  58. In other words, even if the government that year dedicated every 
  59. penny it collected in personal income taxes to paying just 
  60. *interest* on the debt, it wouldn't be enough."

  62. We Americans all have a vague sense that something is very wrong. 
  63. The general population "...senses and is worried about the 
  64. disaster our politicians are about to drop us into." And, 
  65. according to Figgie, a fiscal Armageddon *will* soon be upon us 
  66. unless we act immediately to prevent it. "This is our last 
  67. chance. We're out of time."

  71. They are killing our country, but who are "they?"
  72.  
  73. According to the authors, there are "...536 of them, and they 
  74. have hired about twenty thousand bright and energetic people to 
  75. act as their accomplices and assistants... At the head of the 
  76. list of the people who are killing our country is the president 
  77. of the United States [Bush]." Who are "they?" They are the 435 
  78. members of the House of Representatives, the 100 members of the 
  79. Senate, and the president.

  81. Our so-called leaders in Washington have been bleeding this 
  82. country to death. They "...are doing to us what George III, 
  83. Adolph Hitler, Emperor Hirohito, and Nikita Krushchev tried to do 
  84. but failed."

  86. And it is *our fault* because we have let it happen! "[We] let 
  87. them, you and I. We've not only let them, we've encouraged them, 
  88. because we wanted to keep hearing the lies they told us."

  90. And because in the final analysis it is *us* who have let the 
  91. current fiscal crisis develop, it is up to *us* to try to keep it 
  92. from going over the brink. And we "...don't have much time -- two 
  93. to three years at the most -- to save ourselves. Save 
  94. *ourselves*... not ask someone to save us. No one will. Certainly 
  95. not the lobbyists for foreign governments and foreign 
  96. corporations who range free in the power corridors of 
  97. Washington."

  99. Even our leaders won't do it for us, unless we force them to. Mr. 
  100. Figgie is convinced "...that our so-called leaders have in fact 
  101. sold us out."

  106. You can do a lot of good by taking this article and posting it to 
  107. other areas besides "alt.activism." You can also post this or 
  108. upload it as a file to a local BBS. This would help give the 
  109. people of this nation an alternative to the "fluff" and 
  110. propaganda posturing as hard news which they are currently 
  111. getting from the major networks.
