- I'm trying to preserve a relic of computing, 1975 style, and one bit of
- this relic is an RX01 drive -- that is, a dual 8" floppy drive. I have
- two of these, and I face a decision: Should I scrap the broken drive or
- fix it?
-
- To fix my broken RX01, I need to replace a Warner Electric stepping motor
- (4 windings, common return, 24 volt) used to drive the head positioning
- lead screw. The one I have has one winding shorted out (this blew a
- drive transistor, but those are pretty generic animals to replace if I can
- get a good motor).
-
- The broken drive also has a broken hub clamp assembly (specifically,
- the retaining clips and other mounting hardware that hold the hub clamp
- to the drive are missing). For the curious, the hub clamp is the thing
- that holds the center of the diskette to the drive spindle when you close
- the door on the drive.
-
- If anyone out there has already begun to cannibalize a DEC 8" floppy drive
- for parts and is willing to part with the stepping motor and hub clamp
- retaining hardware, please get in touch with me by E-mail. Otherwise, my
- second RX01 drive will itself become a target for cannibalization.
