- I purchased a Compaq Deskpro 286-12 at the Cary Hamfest last week
- and I could use a little information. I bought this machine "as is"
- with no documentation and not much idea of what was inside of it (I
- did see it boot before paying for it, though). I have several
- questions about the machine and the various boards I have found
- therein. If you could help out, either with documentation you don't
- need any more, answers to specific questions, pointers to more
- appropriate news groups, etc. I'd appreciate it.
-
- The biggest problem I'm having right now is with its extended memory
- (XMS). I installed DOS 5.0 with HIMEM.SYS and DOS=HIGH in the
- config.sys file (standard installation created the file). With this
- setup, the machine locks up with a "Parity check 2 ??????" message
- when accessing most, but not all, floppies. Also, when I tried to
- install MS Windows 3.1, it locked up with the same message when
- running the SETUP program. Removing the DOS=HIGH problem fixed the
- floppy crash; removing HIMEM and DOS=HIGH caused Windows SETUP to
- lock up (same msg) when it tried to "install the XMS driver". Therefore
- I think I'm having trouble with the extended memory. I have tried
- various combinations of the /cpuclock and /machine options on HIMEM.SYS
- to no avail.
-
- Machine setup:
-
- Compaq Deskpro 286-12 with 640K on the motherboard (I think)
- AST 286 Sixpack with 2 1M SIMMS
- Northern Telecom modem of unknown baud rate
- 3Com EtherLink II card
- Floppy/Serial/Parallel/Winchester card (probably Compaq brand)
- VGA card of unknown brand (has a Paradise VGA chip) + mono monitor
-
- I have some more specific information, model numbers, switch settings,
- etc., at home for each of these. If you think you can help me figure
- out any of this equipment, drop me a line. Thanks.
-
- P.S.: I also got an HP LaserJet II printer. If you have any doc on this
- machine that you don't need anymore, I could use that too.
