  20. I think the "city" model is horribly corny.  Constantly having to
  21. translate "city hall" (or whatever) into whatever it really
  22. represents wastes human brainpower.

  24. Besides, it's insidious cultural discrimination against us hicks
  25. who live out in the country :-)  Why not call the various menu
  26. selections "barnyard", "stable", "dung-heap", "trough", "silo",
  27. etc., instead of "city hall", "court house", etc.?  :-)

  29. Or maybe the suburbanites would like some terms they could
  30. relate to, like "subdivision", "mall", "another subdivision",
  31. "another mall", ...  :-)

  33. But seriously -- it's *not* a city, it's a computer system for
  34. storage, retrieval, and communication of information.  Why not
  35. use words that describe its real functions?

  37. (Note to those who have never used a FreeNet system:  the authors of
  38. many such systems present the system to the user as if it were a
  39. "city," with different functions or menu selections being given
  40. cutesy names like "city hall" instead of a description of what
  41. they really represent.  The cutesy names are supposed to be
  42. analogous to the actual function the represent.)
